Agile Periodization Approaches to Planning and Performance: From Microcycles to Skill Mastery

Mladen Jovanović

11. - 12.10. 2025 Brno | Brno

This October, we’ll be welcoming one of the most respected strength and conditioning coaches in Europe. Mladen is an expert in physical preparation and sports science, working with top-level teams and athletes across various disciplines. He is the author of several books, one of which has become a foundational resource in strength training. His work focuses on data-driven training, velocity-based methods, and effective performance planning.

What can we expect over these two days, and what will we be discussing with Mladen?

Microcycle Planning: Agile Concepts

In this lecture, Mladen will introduce Agile Periodization concepts designed to enhance microcycle planning. Agile Periodization departs from traditional rigid structures by incorporating adaptability and responsive decision-making into training plans through iterated approach. Coaches will learn how to design microcycles that dynamically adjust based on athlete feedback, readiness, and real-time performance data, ensuring training remains effective and flexible in the face of uncertainty.

HIIT: Testing and Training for Running-based Sports

Mladen will share insights from his acclaimed HIIT Manual, focusing on the implementation of High-Intensity Interval Training specifically for running-based sports. The session covers testing methods such as Maximum Aerobic Speed (MAS), Maximum Sprint Speed (MSS), and Anaerobic Speed Reserve (ASR), along with practical training prescriptions. Coaches will gain actionable strategies to customize interval training protocols tailored to the unique demands of team sports.

Athletic Profiling Using Modern Technology

This lecture by Mladen explores how contemporary technology can refine athletic profiling. Mladen will demonstrate tools and techniques, including force-velocity profiling and data analysis using open-source software. Participants will learn to collect, analyze, and interpret performance data to inform targeted training interventions, track progress, and optimize athlete development effectively.

Simple Resistance Training Prescription

Drawing upon his Strength Training Manual, Mladen will provide clear, practical methods for resistance training prescription. Coaches will learn straightforward techniques involving percent-based loading, repetition maximum estimation, and velocity-based training (VBT). The session emphasizes efficiency and modularity, enabling coaches to develop individualized and adaptable training programs suited to their athletes‘ ongoing progress.

Visual Management

In this session, Mladen introduces the use of visual management tools, such as Kanban boards, to streamline the planning, monitoring, and adjustment of training programs. Participants will discover how visual tools can enhance communication among coaching staff, simplify athlete progress tracking, and foster a transparent, adaptable training environment.

Methodology and Skill Acquisition

Mladen will address the critical relationship between training methodologies and skill acquisition processes. Coaches will explore practical concepts such as implicit versus explicit learning, feedback mechanisms, and structured practice designs aimed at maximizing skill retention and transfer. This lecture integrates solid training methodologies with effective skill acquisition strategies, equipping coaches with methods to significantly boost athlete learning outcomes.

The seminar will be conducted entirely in English.
